Joanie Award

Joanie at 2007 event

Uniting Against Lung Cancer honors news writer Joan Scarangello’s memory by recognizing exceptional broadcast and print journalism about lung cancer.

Joan, for whom Uniting’s partner Joan’s Legacy was named, believed news organizations need to tell the important stories about lung cancer. Every year, Uniting seeks out the best news and presents the Joanie Award.

The winner is selected by a committee of leaders in the broadcast and print journalism field. The committee includes:

Phil Alongi
Alongi Media Solutions

Lenny Bourin
Senior Producer, ABC News

Patrick McNeive
Director of Editing Operations, ABC News

Felicia Patinkin
Producer, ABC News

Libby Rager
Producer, CNN

Robin Skolnick
Coordinating Producer, NBC News

Dean Starkman
Editor, Columbia Journalism Review

The "Joanie Award" Statue

Was created by sculptor Catherine Bohrman, by commission from Joan’s Legacy. The 12" high sculpture is cast in bronze, from a mold created only for the Joanie awards. The sculptor has been an artist for almost 30 years, working first in stone and now in bronze and aluminum. Her pieces are in collections around the world. More examples of her work can be seen at www.catherinebohrman.com.
