Uniting Against Lung Cancer Congratulates Medical Committee Member Dr. Mark Kris, Recipient of the 2011 ASCO Humanitarian Award

Dr. Mark Kris, a founding member of the Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) Medical Committee, is the first recipient of the American Society for Clinical Oncology (ASCO) Humanitarian Award. The award was announced at the opening session of the ASCO 2011 Annual Meeting in Chicago, Illinois and was presented to Dr. Kris in recognition of his dedication and compassion in his professional and personal endeavors.

Dr. Kris has served on the UALC Medical Committee since its inception in 2001. His insight and expertise have helped guide and refine UALC’s Scientific Program, which has awarded over $7.3 million to investigators engaged in cutting-edge, critical research in lung cancer.

Dr. Kris is the Chief, Thoracic Oncology Service and the William and Joy Ruane Chair in Thoracic Oncology at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, as well as Professor of Medicine at Weill Medical College of Cornell University. In addition to his professional activities, Dr. Kris volunteers his time to many cancer-related endeavors and humanitarian projects.

"His dedication to advancing lung cancer research, treatment, and awareness has shaped our Scientific Program and advocacy activities, and touched the lives of countless patients, caregivers and families affected by this disease."

From caring and advocating for cancer patients to developing youth programs and building homes in impoverished areas at home and abroad, Dr. Kris exemplifies what it means to be an outstanding caregiver and humanitarian.

The ASCO Humanitarian Award recognizes oncologists who personify ASCO's mission and values by going above and beyond the call of duty in providing outstanding patient care through innovative means or exceptional service or leadership in the United States or abroad. It is presented to an ASCO member who distinguishes himself/herself through voluntary and non-compensated humanitarian endeavors.
