$200,000 Research Grant to Accelerate Benefit for Patients

NEW YORK, NY – Oct. 10, 2012 – Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) and the National Lung Cancer Partnership (the Partnership) are joining forces to extend the lives of lung cancer patients with their new Impact Award.

This jointly funded initiative is expected to produce significant improvement for lung cancer patients within the next five years. The Impact Award is a two-year, $200,000 scientific grant available to researchers investigating lung cancer prevention, detection or therapy, ultimately in pursuit of a cure.

The largest scientific grant offered by both the Partnership and UALC, this initiative also represents an unprecedented collaboration between these two leaders in the lung cancer field.

“Lung cancer patients and their families can’t keep waiting for life-saving scientific advances,” says Linda Wenger, UALC executive director. “We’re working with our colleagues at the Partnership to accelerate breakthroughs in lung cancer research that directly benefit patients.”

“Every year in the US, 160,000 lives are lost to lung cancer, more than breast, colon and prostate cancers combined,” adds Regina Vidaver, PhD, executive director of the Partnership. “As organizations driven by grassroots support from the lung cancer community, we’re ultimately focused on finding a cure for lung cancer. This initiative ensures that as we take strides toward a cure, we walk together.”

The Impact Award is open to researchers at or above the level of Assistant Professor (or equivalent) at not-for-profit sponsoring institutions in the US. Letters of intent are due November 12, 2012, with full applications subsequently invited.
