The first anniversary of Kim’s death was September 22, 2008. It seems as time passes, the pain of her death is less, but we miss her more each day. Kim was God’s blessing as my wife. She completed me. Kim dreamed for years of being a mother and was the best to Carter and Jack. She cherished every day spent with the boys. Kim was a genuine, caring and loving daughter, sister and friend to all.

I think many of us reflect almost daily on Kim’s battle with cancer and the remarkable courage she showed each day. She will always be my inspiration and her spirit will live on in all of us. Kim’s faith in God never waivered and grew stronger each day. She had so many very difficult days, yet was always positive and complained so little. She fought the cancer so hard. She did everything possible spiritually, medically and physically to help her live.

Kim repeatedly talked about “how did she get lung cancer” when she never smoked. She met others with a similar diagnoses and wanted to know what caused this cancer and how she could help others from getting the same lung cancer. I can think of no better way to honor Kim than by helping carry through with her wishes.

I have been overwhelmed with the love and support Kim and our family has received during her illness, and that still is continuing today. I often read the cards from hundreds sent to Kim. One favorite I read often to be comforted says:

“Kim was the strongest person I think I will ever know.” – Dawn

Kim touched so many lives, together we will honor her.

Our goal was to raise $100,000, and when we reach this level, a research grant would be named in Kim’s honor.

To date, over $106,000 has been raised in memory of Kim. The money was used to fund the 2008 Kim Massengill Seibert Memorial Fund Award given to Esther P. Black, Ph.D., at the University of Kentucky for her research: Dual targeted therapy: can MEK inhibition improve response and reduce acquired resistance in EGFR-dependent NSCLC?
