History

Uniting Against Lung Cancer (UALC) was founded in 2001 as Joan’s Legacy, in honor of Joan Scarangello McNeive. Joan was a gifted journalist and non-smoker who died at age 47 after a nine-month battle with lung cancer, exactly 20 years after her mother, a non-smoker, died from the disease. Joan vowed to fight the disease and find a cure. When her time ran out, her family and friends took on her mission and created Joan’s Legacy.

With a growing list of like-minded partners across the country, Joan’s Legacy officially became Uniting Against Lung Cancer in 2009. Reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to uniting all families and organizations dedicated to conquering lung cancer, the board quickly expanded to include members from around the country.
